Square Vintage Ganesh Wallhanging With Applique Border

A traditional vintage Ganesh square wall hanging in an unusual circular mandala design. Dancers circle a central floral mandala design. They, in turn, are surrounded by Ganesh, the elephant-headed God of good fortune and happiness, Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth standing in a lotus blossom, and Krishna playing a flute. The four corners are decorated with ‘Tree of Life’ designs and it is embellished with large ‘Shisha’ mirrorwork.

It is finished with an elaborate multiple border of embroidery and applique work. The silk embroidery is particulalrly well executed and in very good condition but the background has a few blemishes and stains reflecting its age and use. It has 2 cotton hanging loops. Made by the farming (Kanbi) communities of Saurashtra. c1960.
