Vintage Textile – Vintage Kantha Quilt
£290
Beautifully made vintage kantha piece. Tiny kantha stitches on off white unbleached cotton makeup the background, with repeating parallel lines of silk running stitch in dark green, reds and blue. Black silk tassels finish each corner. Reverse – bands of brocade in greens, gold, mulberry and reds with the reverse stitching from the front. Some small staining and patches on both sides but on the whole very good condition for its age. These old kantha pieces are increasingly difficult to find, especially in good condition. C1950 Bengal.
Kantha is a traditional method of sewing together layers of cotton saris using a simple running stitch called ‘Kantha’. This age old method of recycling originated in Bangladesh and was an excellent way of creating quilts from pre-existing fabric. Each piece is completely unique.
